Commencement speakers are fond of recalling the old saying "Education is what's left after you have forgotten everything you were taught." The wisdom in that statement recognizes that much of college learning opportunities occur outside the formal classroom. That's one reason why the design of dining halls and cafés is so important. They are the places where students gather daily to dine, study, laugh, and share their lives with their peers. The design of welcoming, modern dining facilities is just as important as the creation of formal teaching spaces.
